A powerful play exploring British colonialism in southern Africa and the use of Christianity for cultural disruption. Set in 1896 Rhodesia, a young girl whose father has passed away is to be traded, by her uncle, to an older man with ten wives in exchange for a number of goats. She escapes this forced marriage by taking refuge in the home of an African teacher in the Catholic church. In exchange, she is given a new name, forbidden to practice her traditional beliefs, required to wear clothing of the colonizers, and, eventually, is cut off from her family to prove …

The University Singers join the University Wind Ensemble to premiere Brahms’ haunting choral lament Nänie in a new version for chamber winds, strings and chorus arranged and conducted by J. Nick Smith. Program to also include Stephen Montague’s Intrada 1631, Arnold Schoenberg’s Theme and Variations, Op. 43a, and Michael Martin’s Lontano. Emily Threinen and J. Nick Smith, conductors. Howard Jones Acoustic Trio is an intimate, stripped-down trip through Howard’s 30-year music career. Featuring Howard on piano, Robin Boult (Roger Daltry, Dave Stewart, Fish) on acoustic guitar, and Nick Beggs (Kajagoogoo, Belinda Carlisle, John Paul Jones) on chapman stick, this performance delivers a fresh take on Howard’s best-known hits. This show also provides the opportunity for the audience to hear first-hand about the inspiration behind Howard’s beloved material, as well as stories from his touring career.
