UMN-TFA Proposed Partnership: Graduate Students meet with Dean Quam to demand she say no to TFA

Graduate students at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) published a collective statement opposing a proposed partnership between the UMN and Teach for America (TFA) on June 25, 2013. On behalf of the almost 300 students, teachers, parents and community members that subsequently signed on their support, a group of nine graduate students representing various programs and departments within CEHD met with Dean Jean Quam and five other members of CEHD’s administration on July 11, 2013 to demand they say no to the partnership by the end of next week. Quam declined to make a decision, and said they were well into negotiations with TFA, causing grad students to believe that the decision is likely to be yes unless we continue to build pressure and attract attention.

The partnership would provide a 5-week summer training institute and, potentially in the future, an alternative licensure program in Minnesota. Graduate student objected that the partnership would contribute to the increasing privatization and exploitation of public schools in communities most affected by racism and state violence. Despite this, the Dean stated that TFA is here to stay, and that it has a great deal of support in the legislature, among the Board of Regents, and in the business world.

Dean Quam opened the meeting by stating our emotion-laden opinions were only one perspective. She reported that the partnership with TFA would allow them to innovate CEHD’s teacher education programs, and to be able to provide options for people who weren’t quite sure if they wanted to be teachers yet. Grad students countered that those who are unsure if they want to be teachers should not be headed into any classroom with so little training or understanding of schooling in a broader social and political context. The College does not need TFA in order to innovate teacher education or to make it more accessible and culturally relevant to a more diverse group of people. Grad students warned against conflating “innovating teacher education” and partnering with a wealthy and well-resourced political machine that has its own goals for marketizing and privatizing education.

Teach for America is a deep-pocketed and well-branded organization that promotes a political agenda, rendering a decision to partner on the part of UMN a political statement of support for the corporate education reform movement. On behalf of the close to 300 signers of the statement we demand Dean Quam to make a commitment to Twin Cities schools and communities instead of to TFA.
