interview of Jim Carroll

Jim Carroll was 19 and homesick. He was crammed into one of 900 C 47s along with 15 buddies of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”. They were loaded down with 100 pound packs, containing their rifle, ammunition and a 3-day supply of k rations. German guns fired from the French beaches below. The tracers flashed around them.

It was June 6, 1944, D Day, and Jim was in the first wave. Jim parachuted into a small meadow with a stream running through it. He made it through that first deadly day and went on to several major battles of World War II, including Bastogne in Belgium, Operation Market Garden in Holland and the Battle of the Bulge. He was decorated many times and just recently received France’s highest award, the Legion of Honor Medal. (Médaille de la Légion d’Honneur)

Jim, now 91, will speak tonight, December 2, 20014 about his experiences on Bonjour Minnesota, 8:00-10:00 PM. He will speak in the first part of the program, hosted by Caryl Minnetti and Dana Bogema. Don’t miss this interesting interview which is historically important.
