December 2011 Bonjour Minnesota Archives

Scott Berger, a singer from the VocalEssence Chorus, speaks to us this evening about the outstanding choral Ensemble and Chorus and their director, Philip Brunelle. VocalEssence is giving a series of concerts featuring French Christmas carols, which will appear on a new cd. VocalEssence plays to packed audiences at each concert and is known for the beauty and originality of their singing. These Christmas concerts also showcase new carols commissioned by Philip Brunelle.

Mathieu Rivière, executive director of Sofitel, is our guest this evening. Mathieu, originally from Chartres, France, will speak of seasonal food specialties such as the Bûche de Noël (Yule Log cake) and the Galette des Rois (Kings’ Cake) served on January 6 (Epiphany or Kings’ Day) to commemorate the arrival of the 3 kings at the stable where Jesus was born. Listeners are invited to purchase both cakes at the Sofitel Petit Marché.

Our guest tonight is François Fouquerel, director of the French Camp of Concordia Language Village, near Bemidji. He will speak to us of childhood Christmas memories in Normandy, where he was born.

Louise and Caryl will play French Christmas carols and popular songs of the season. We all will discuss French parties and food specialities at Christmas and New Year.
