June 2016 Global Beat Archives

Today's program stays entirely within the continent of Africa – old and new – north, west, central & south.  Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, the Sahara, Congo, Angola, and the Ivory Coast.  Just saying… E N J O Y !!!

After opening with a set of Nat King Cole 'en espanol'… I ran into some technical difficulties but got out a set of Ceu (by request) – who will be coming to the Dakota Sat. June 25 for a return engagement.  The show got back into the groove shortly though.  From Brasil, to eastern Cuba, to the Latin influence on African styles.  Then as a prelude to another tribute to local legend Prince, we go back to the portuguese language – and the voice of Ana Moura.

African, Cuban, Brasilian artists populate the majority of this program today. From The Congo, to Havana (via Brooklyn), on to Northeast Brasil then to Sao Paulo & Rio.  I end the prgram with a brand new release from the Ladino-Sephardic band from Tel Aviv, Baladino.

This week's program opens with music form Ireland and the band, Kila.  Then another tribute set to Prince, from Hit n Run – Phase 2.  His "Rock & Roll Love Affair" and a reprise of his calling out to "Take All the Guns Away" – Baltimore !  Before a preview from Michael Franti's return to St. Paul – I also play a set of regional favorite indigenous poet-singer-activists John Trudell and Floyd Westerman.

Paul Harding from Foreign Currency is sitting in for Doug this afternoon, playing music from Mali, Haiti, Greece, Brazil, Nigeria, Trinidad, Ethiopia, and more!
