August 2016 Global Beat Archives

Friends across the ocean !  Cesaria Evora, JaJa Bashengezi & from Senegal, Cheikh Lo & Youssou N'Dour !  And another musician, friend, & a MN. family member – Mike O'Neil… who just left this plain today in Paris… A tribute to his work and connections.  Then a move into some classic Belafonte and back to Mali & Paris — before closing it all up in Brasil on the eve of the Summer Olympics opening in Rio on Friday.

Part two of my tribute to Michael O'Neil, musician with global connections, and a tight connection to my own history.  As an extended family member, we've visited together both in France & MN, making connections to our shared love of music & life.  Having just spent some weeks with him in Paris, his adopted home for decades, we reconnected with great zeal. On today's program you can hear some of his collaboration with poet, John Noonan alongside 3 more original compositions.

Back to Europe for some Hot Club jazz & a tribute to Belgian chromatic harmonica player Toots Thielemans.  Then to Cuba for a Celia Cruz set alongside local orchestra Malamanya – celebrating a CD release on Friday evening at the Cedar Cultural Center – and following up with the Pedrito Martinez Group !  A quick pass through Peru for Novalima and a set of Buffy Sainte-Marie in town Friday evening as well !  Closing up with a few African artists and another song from Prince – which still deserves heavy rotation !
