March 2016 Echo Chamber Archives

Another big night with a bunch of new releases! First up was the new “Northern Light” compilation of Canadian-produced dub & reggae on Svaha Sound with the tune “Babylon” from MakaRon meets Hypernashion. This was followed by Leah Rosier and Rise & Shine’s excellent new “Only Irie Vibes” album and the track “All Around the World” featuring the legendary Mighty Diamonds. More great new sounds tonight from Joe Pilgrim & the Ligerians (the great new “Intuition” album); Raging Fyah (covering Dennis Brown’s “Milk & Honey”); Bugle (on the Bread & Butter riddim); Riddim and Beats Production featuring Asante Amen; The Cliftones; Taj Weekes & Adowa (from the superb new “Love Herb & Reggae” album); and PhOniAndFlOrE. From there we mixed things up with tunes from Princess Kazaya, Tribal Realities, Sahra Indio & Digikal Roots, Gold-E-Locks, Aaron Silk, Kali Uchis, Flavia Coelho, Jean-Paul Dub, Dubiterian, Winston Edwards & Dennis “Blackbeard” Bovell, Kalya Scintilla, The Upsetters, Igor Boxx, Mira Calix, and more…

In celebration of International Women’s Day (Mar 8th) and National Women’s History Month, the Echo Chamber presented its annual “Beautiful Sounds of Women…Around the World” special. And what a fantastic list of women we had on this year’s show. In Dr. StrangeDub’s half of the program the list included: Leah Rosier, DJ Vadim & Sena, Anuhea, Dubblestandart (feat. Marcia Griffiths), Rhia Creole Lawrence & the Dub Master, Blondub Sexy Sound (Orly Frider), 60 Channels (feat. The Angel), Andrea Parker, Sharon Black, Sonya Spence, Jah Wobble & Julie Campbell, Kali Uchis, Hollie Cook, Sahra Indio, Nneka, Easy Star All Stars (feat. Kirsty Rock), TriXtar, Chyna Nicole, Niyaz (feat. Azam Ali), Natacha Atlas, Gospel Machine (feat. Jayanthi Kyle), Groundation (feat. Judy Mowatt), Anouk Aiata & Taiwan MC, SXtheMadArtist (Stalo Xinari), and Trumystic (feat. Kirsty Rock). And if the doctor’s mix wasn’t eclectic enough, DJ Baby Swiss stretched things even further. His list included Poly Styrene, Mimi Maura, The Widdler (remixing Lily Allen), Ill:Esha, Sena & Judi K, The Selecter (feat. Pauline Black), Joan Osborne, Palemina (Smith), The Slits (feat. Ari Up), Hollie Cook, Deya Dova, Shiina Ringo, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and Perfume. Can you tell that Swiss has a thing for Japanese girl bands? So hats off to all the great lady singers & players in this year’s special. Of course, many ladies were missed…so we will fill out the rest of National Women’s History Month with many more beautiful sounds of women!

What a big show! Just in time for Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 80th birthday was the “Black Ark Vampires” track with Subatomic Sound System that opened our show. Followed this with two more L$P productions (including one with the late great Roland Alpphonso), before moving on to more new releases. And what a ton of new releases — including the Unified Highway self-titled album; Ancient Astronauts’ new “Themes from Tomorrowland – Instrumentals” album; the new “Migration” album from Poirier; Dalindeo’s excellent new “Slavic Souls” album on BBE; and more new releases from Ras Lion, Tour de Force, O.B.F. ft. Troy Berkley, Quantic & Jimetta Rose, Irieginal Nutty Tree, Dillon Wyte, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Anoushka Shankar, Adam Prescott, Tigers Project, and the new mix of “5 Fingers of Ska” from Mutant Frogs (and intended for the “Echo Chamber – Around the World in Dub – Vol. 7 & 8” release, soon come on Dan Dada Records). We also did a “coming to town” set featuring Warrior King, HIRIE, The Expanders, and Iration. Added to this was more great music from the likes of Sly & Robbie, Nkulee Dube, Prince Jazzbo, The Process ft. Lord Kimo, Senior All Stars, Jackie Mittoo, Mad Professor, Ammoye, Tony Freebird, The Surfmen, and more…
