Tonight, as part of KFAI’s spring pledge drive, the Echo Chamber presented our annual “Free the Marijuana” special. It was a crazy kind of night….in a cloud of ganja smoke… Alright, OK…so there wasn’t really any ganja smoke in the studio (too bad), just plenty of ganja-inspired reggae and dub, with some great soundbytes from “Reefer Madness”. A special part of tonight’s program was the The Groove Thief’s “Stepping Between Reggae and Dub Vol. 4” ganja-filled mix (which we played most of).

Kicked off tonight’s show with some hardcore porn… That is, we started with “Linda Love Dub” from Dubzilla’s “Dub Naturalis” album – which includes some graphic soundbytes from the movie “Deep Throat”. From there we moved into some choice new releases from: Apocalypse Dub Faction (“Jah Never Fail I” album on Dubkey); Alpha & Omega (“The Half That’s Never Been Told” on Steppas); Secret Archives of the Vatican (“Storytellers” on Broken Drum); Bass Defender; Masia One x Suns of Dub; Beats Antique; Dubmatix & Prince Blanco; Tasonia; Rara Avis; Dom La Nena (remixed by Joey Altruda); Ce’Cile (feat. JaRae); sUb_modU; The Skints; Don Goliath; Djemetta; and N-Tone Dub. Another new release was the cool “Blue Moon” compilation (compiled by Johnny Blue) on MikelaBella. Also tonight: Easy Star All Stars “The Great Gig in the Sky” with a cool radio-ID intro featuring Kirsty Rock; a nice long Jah Wobble set; plus tracks from Twilight Archive, The Mighty Diamonds, Rebelution, Phil Pratt, Yulduz, Shpongle, Linval Thompson, Rootsteppa, Caravan Palace, and more…

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Echo Chamber presented the annual “WORD BEAT I POWA” dub poetry/poetry/spoken word special last night. Special items include a street poet (Vernon Patterson) reciting a poem on the street; a special dubplate from our friend Eggblood; and Dr. StrangeDub’s own “monkey-ized” mix of Mutabaruka’s “The Monkey (Speaks His Mind)”. Besides Muta, the dub poets included Linton Kwesi Johnson, Yasus Afari, Jazzmin Tutum, Jean Binta Breeze, Ras Takura, Desmond Faada Johnson, Haji Mike, Glenville Bryan (dub), Oku Onuora, Malachi Smith, and Spaceape (with Dub Gabriel). More poetry, toasting, and spoken word from Jack Kerouac, JEN, Bill Laswell & Nicole Blackman, e.g. bailey, U-Roy, Paul Bowles, e.g. bailey, William S. Burroughs (with Dub Spencer & Trance Hill), Jah Wobble, I-Roy, Big Youth, Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Selecter, Prince Jazzbo, Brain Damage (ft. Suzanne Thoma), and more. Oh yeah, and DJ Baby Swiss went a bit crazy and played a near half-hour piece from the incomparable Ken Nordine.

Another big night of new dubwise releases, new world music releases, and even a track from Janelle Monae & Erykah Badu. First up was the excellent double-CD which is raising money for a good cause: “Help in Dub for Phillippines” (from Spirit of Umoja/Virlanie). I found out about this new dub compilation (compiled by Mighty Clem and mastered by Russ Disciple) on the Culture Dub site and bought it through ulule.com. Next up was the lovely new release just in time for summer – Hollie Cook’s album “Twice” (on Mr. Bongo). This one I bought through the pre-order at PledgeMusic – and my “pledge” got me the new album digitally, plus her first 2 albums sent via snail-mail. Another fresh release making its debut was the rootical “Suburban Roots” release from Dublaw (on Svaha Sound). More choice new releases tonight from Ricky Chaplin, Version Big-Fi, Thomas Blondet, Tribal Realities, Empress Ayeola, Daleth Karl ft. Joe Peng, Susheela Raman (the excellent “Queen Between” album), El Remolon, Violons Barbares, Dubsynaticx, and Teebs. And rounding out the show were grooves from Katchafire (who were just in town), LKJ, Dubcall, T.U.G.G., Kalya Scintilla, DJ Tricky Cris, Mickey Hart, Jean-Michel Jarre, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Ranking Ann, King Tubby, Androcell, and more…
