February 2014 Echo Chamber Archives

Tonight we finally debuted the strangely cool “opera in dub” project from Uly E. Neuens, Aldubb, and many others titled “AudioArt presents Op’Ra Dub Style” (on Irie Ites label). Also new tonight, the long-awaited collaboration of Masia One & Dubtonic Kru – the upcoming “Tuff Wong” release, plus Mighty Mystic’s excellent “Concrete World” album. More cool new sounds from Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate (from the album “Faya” on Cumbancha), Akasha Experience, Chronixx, KBong, Vibration Lab, and others. The good doctor also featured Third World’s “Black, Gold, & Green” in memory of Bunny Rugs, who passed away this month.

After the half, Swiss followed up Dub Movement with another Brasilian outfit, OBMJ, before kicking in with a good teaser for the annual the Bob Marley birthday/King Tubby memorial special that usually airs the first week of February, with UB40’s take on “Soul Rebel” and Pauline Black turning in a wonderful “Sun Is Shining” from The Selecter’s 3-volume Trojan Songbook series. Derrick Harriott’s (also Feb. 6) birthday also got noticed. The calendar date is also shared by Perfume producer Yasutaka Nakata, hence yet more play for “Furikaeru to Iru Yo” and the haunting “23:30” For a closer, Jawaiian reggae artist Sean Na’auao drew us back to Marley with a short excerpt of “Three Little Birds” as Bobby McFerrin might have done it. Thanks to Morning Blender David Cummings for slipping up that tune; we owe him one. :>)

The good Doctor started the show in a Love Dub mode, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, while Swiss finished things off with part 2 of our annual birthday tribute to Bob Marley. Kicked things off with the excellent new Dubamix “Pour Qiu Sonne le Dub” album, playing the 1st track “Liberte I”. From there we got deep into love with “Love Letter Dub” from Katchafire (dubbed by Umberto Echo); “I Never Needed You More” from Victoria Moralez (ft. Mazwakhe Hlatshwayo); “Old Time Love” by Tour de Force; “Love Or An Illusion” from Mighty Mystic’s new “Concrete World” album; “Sea of Love” from Bandulu Dub vs. Isaac Maya; “Love Evahlastin’” from Dr. Echo & Solange St. Croix; and many more… Also, included a couple new tracks from City Cultured & The Breadwinners, Joe Driscoll & Sekou Koyate, Zebby Blax/Unitone Soundimentional, Asante Amen, and Aldubb (from the “Op’Ra Dub Style” album). Finally, StrangeDub played an excellent 9-track mix from Jah9 (and Rory StoneLove) called 9MM Message Music Vol.1

In the 2nd half Swiss concentrated on Bob Marley & the Wailers covers: “Three Little Birds” by Sean Na’auao; “Bus Dem Shut” by Marcia Griffiths; “I’m Still Waiting” from Delroy Wilson; “Dub Those Crazy Baldheads” from Lee Scratch Perry; “Soul Rebel” from UB40; and “Sun Is Shining” from The Selecter. More great stuff in Swiss’ mix from Bob Marley & the Wailers, I-Roy, Peter Tosh, The Skatalites/King Tubby, Jennifer Lara, Tsuyoshi Kawakami & his Moodmakers, and a few more.

Another crazy installment of the Echo Chamber – filled with tons of new dubs, some classic roots, a tasty Latin set, and other fun bits. In the new dub and roots category were brand new tracks from Kanka (“Watch Your Step” album on Dubalistik), Bass Culture Players, Lali/Munky Lee, Relaxo meets The Technician (unreleased track), Afrokeys (unreleased track), Tony Dubshot & Jacky Ligon (from the “23” release on Dubbhism Deluxe). Red Star Martyrs (remixed by the Dubbstyle), Victor Essiet & the Mandators, and Tackhead (from the “For the Love of Money” album). The Latin tracks included a couple from Mexican Institute of Sound’s excellent “Politico” album, one from Arrebato Ensemble’s new “Absolucion” album, and two from the great self-titled release by Ondatropica. Also in the mix was the funky new “Curiosities” album from Lord Echo; the new “Redux” album of archived tracks from Keith & Tex; plus Sly & Robbie meet Mad Professor, Shigeto, UB40, Hot Rain, J Boog, Last Soul Descendents, Tokyo Jihen, Dub Majestic, and more…
