October 2014 Rhythm and Grooves Archives

This show featured two new CDs from bassists Rodney Whitaker and Omer Avital, as well as some vintage vinyl from bassist Leroy Vinnegar. Other tunes came from organist Don Patterson, Bruce Henry, Thelonious Monk, Elmo Hope, Nichola Miller, Chris Lomheim, Charlie Watts (yes – the Stones' drummer, with a 40 piece big band), Beat Funktion, and Lee Morgan. The 45 of the week was I Believe in You, by the Gary McFarland Orchestra, from 1961.

Jazz Fan Mario Carrington was my guest today, bringing in music to highlight the work of Producer Creed Taylor. Mario brought in music. from John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Deodato, Grover Washington, Jr., Freddie Hubbard, and Bob James. 

Today I played new music from Akiko, Jason Marsalis, Omer Avital, Dee Alexander, Pippi Ardennia, and Bruce Henry, as well as older tracks from Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff, Lou Donaldson, Ellis Marsalis, Johnny Hartman, Oliver Nelson, and Ben Sidran. The 45 of the week was from Gerry Mulligan, billed as the Jazz Combo from the soundtrack to the movie I Want To Live.
