September 2014 Rhythm and Grooves Archives

Nachito Herrera was unable to make it this week, but will be on the show next week. This week's tunes included music by Jimmy McGriff, Joe Magnerelli, Randy Weston, The Sun Ra Arkestra, Anita O'Day, Ella Mae Morse, The Charlie Watts Orchestra, Mark Elf, Matt Wilson, Evan Christopher, Thisbe Vos and The Adam Meckler Orchestra. The 45 of the Week was Unit 7 by Sam Jones on Riverside Records.

Did a phone interview with vocalist Katia Cardenas and her version of Night and Day. To honor the transition of 96 year old Gerald Wilson, I played four songs from different years of his career leading orchestras, as well as a song by Jimmy Scott and another by Nancy Wilson featuring his arranging and conducting.

It was a pledge drive Saturday. Thanks to those who chose to pledge during my show and contribute to making the pledge drive a success: Tom, Steve, Camille, Greg, and Anonymous. Thanks as well to Pavel Jany of Ticket to Brasil for coming by. the 45 of the week: Boogie Woogie, by King Oliver.

Nachito Herrera stopped by to talk about his upcoming October 5th concert at the Ordway in Saint Paul, and to play a couple of tracks from his album Bembe en mi Casa. I also played tunes from Jimmy McGriff and Hank Crawford, Cannonball Adderley, How Birds Work, Cal Tjader, Dee Alexander, Sean Jones, and Miles Davis. The 45 of the Week was Cast Your Fate to the Wind, by Vince Guaraldi.
