Larry Englund, host of Rhythm and Grooves, KFAI’s Tuesday night jazz show, will broadcast live from the Artists’ Quarter on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in a special extended version of the show starting at 9:30 and going to Midnight.

Englund often features a cut or two from such B-3 organ masters as Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, and Joey DeFrancesco on his show, which he has been hosting since July, 2002. Tuesday night organ grooves have been a staple of the AQ for over ten years, often packing the legendary club. The idea of broadcasting the Tuesday Night Band, which features Downtown Bill Brown on Hammond B-3, Billy Franze on guitar, and Kenny Horst on drums, was appealing to Englund, so he approached club owner Kenny Horst.

“Turns out that Kenny had also been thinking about a live broadcast,” said Englund, who has been hosting Rhythm and Grooves for over five years. He continued, “When I approached him with the idea Kenny readily agreed.”

Englund and Horst both want to give listeners a club experience, so Englund will occasionally talk with musicians, staff, and customers during the course of the broadcast, just as any customer might. The result will be a combination of ambient sounds and music, just as if a listener were at the club.

For KFAI radio, the live broadcast provides an opportunity to reach out to Saint Paul listeners who take pride in the jazz club. Two additional live broadcasts are scheduled for March and April. KFAI is a volunteer-based, listener-supported community radio station.
