A weekly three-hour tour starting and ending with traditional, 2-tone and modern ska and rocksteady, sandwiching an hour of space-age lounge, latin jazz, higher-AND-lower-than-fi exotica, moog-o-phonic-a-delia and more of all eras in the middle. Selections veer from the likes of The Skatalites, Carlos Malcolm, The Specials and The Toasters to a middle-hour show-within-a-show called Sherwood's Planet consisting of sounds by Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter, Joe Loco, Combustible Edison, Joe Meek, Señor Coconut, Tipsy, Shiina Ringo, Esquivel, etc. plus the occasional sprinkling of classic Toho and other sci-fi/monster soundtrack stuff, and then a back-to-ska third hour featuring the 4:00 4(+?)-in-a-row (can be 4(+) different songs with the same title, 4(+) ska bands' covers of a particular composer, 4(+) tunes with the word "Ska" in the title, or whatever... ), the GotchaSKAvered Ska Cover-of-the-Month Club and more ska and rocksteady by everybody from The Selecter, The Slackers, Prince Buster, The Liptones, Deal's Gone Bad and Umbrella Bed to Diego's Umbrella, Ska Cubano, Smoke Like A Fish, The Scofflaws, Hepcat, the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, and pretty much ANY outfit with "Ska-Jazz" in its name, and original bumpers by the RSST "house band", the one-man studio project Mutant Frogs (as well as the "expanded" one-man studio orchestra known as the "Carr/McWheele Orchestra"), just to scrape the tip o' the iceberg_ 2 Much for 3 hours!

And don't forget, if you miss the show, listen anytime on the internet...
all KFAI-originated shows are archived online for 2 weeks_ sometimes more!

2/16/2012 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

2/16 in a nutshell...

Working our way back from Hour 3 as usual:
It was our late Skalentine's special, so the 4(+1)@4 theme was a no-brainer... 5 tunes not-at-all connected in any way to our overarching theme! GotchaSKAvered's February Japanese lollipop was by The Dreamlets, and it was the mixed English/Japanese version never aired on the RSST until this very episode! Sherwood belatedly celebrated the birthday of Tina "Ginger" Louise with that "Honeybees" favorite from Gilligan's Island, "You Need Us", introduced by (the late) Jim "Thurston Howell III" Backus. In the "Ooh", Neil "Ska"-daka had some advice on how to attract every "Cinderella"... just Do the Jellyfish! Actually, some of those poolside Jellyfishers look like they're actually doing the Ska... Do it!

2/9/2012 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

2/9 in a nutshell
We've plugged "skeatles" on this show before, but this week, prepare to meet the real thing! The Skeatles, much like Ringo Ska, are an all-Beatles-covers ska band, this one HQ'd in Groningen, Netherlands, where this live gig recording originated. Our "fab" 4(+2)-in-a-row also had Ringo Ska in it, as well as Skapontas. GotchaSKAvered's J-Lollipops week 2 was sung by Mie Nakao, we had another new Pinstripes track, Sherwood reprised Perez Prado's epic "Voodoo Suite", and the "Ooh" belatedly celebrated the same-day (this past Monday Feb. 6) birthdays of Bob Marley and Derrick Harriott. Jerk to the Ska!

2/2/2012 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

(2/2 in a nutshell... )
An RSST debut of a brand-spankin-new Pinstripes track in Hour 3, and it's a goodie... "Alright, Baby" from I on a label we haven't heard of called Collective Culture. We also kicked off an entire month of Japanese "Lollies" as we like to call 'em around here, whether it's "My Boy" "My Girl" "My Collie" or who- or what- ever it is that inspired any given singer to cover the 'Pop. This week: Yukari Ito. The 4(+1)@4 is some Prince Buster-related sides, Sherwood spun one of the 'b's on Shiina Ringo's Carnation single in addition to meandering down Jade Warrior's "Dark River", and listen to the tail end of the "Ooh" for this really cool '60s ska oldie... all the way from Soweto, SA! 'Til next time, keep unearthin'...

1/26/2012 Rocket Ship Ska Trip

1/26 in a nutshell...
Skeatles! Ska Beatles covers by ARTS, Ringo Ska, The Brass Circus and the Clarendonians made up the 4(+1)-in-a-row, followed by the "GotchaSKAllipop", this time by a Swedish outfit called Flamingo Kvintetten, with their 1970 take "Lilla Raringen"... "SvenSKA", indeed! Sherwood dropped another "Buzzz" cut by Tipsy into his mix, and made time flow slowly with substantial help from Serani Poji. Dave Pike had the feelin' with "Spooky", and ... oooooh, how Blue is that Beat at the top of the Opening Oldies Hour? We get three answers... from Chris Farlowe, Rita Hovink, and Joe Meek's Tornados, in that order!
