Week 2 of the KFAI Spring Pledge Drive and the doctors of dub put together a heavy, heavy show! First off, we did part 2 of "Word Beat I Powa", our annual dub poetry/poetry/spoken word special. From our pal Planet Jackson (from On the Wire , BBC Lancashire) we had 2 cool poems from dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah (including the hilarious "Talking Turkeys"). From the Jamaican dub poets Royal African Soldiers we received a history lesson through Ginsu's telling of the "Glorious Past." One of LKJ's dreadest tracks ever, "Five Nights of Bleeding" kept the dub poetry thing going. Then we returned to beat poet Jack Kerouac for a few excerpts (with Paul Haig's "Cinematique" providing some jazzy background). DJ Swiss added the trippy poetry of Tarwater (with the track "Lower Manhattan Pantoum"). One poem we repeated from last week was "Never Here", by e.g. bailey. Rounding out the "Word Beat" was one great Jamaican "toaster" that we missed last week, the incomparable Big Youth (backed by some heavy Twilight Circus). On top of this we had a bunch of new music from Up, Bustle, & Out, Finn the Giant, Doctor Echo/Who Knows, Messian Dread, Maimon, The Storytellers, Cherine Anderson, Natural Black (w/ Twilight Circus), Luciano, Library Science, and more. Finally, we got a taste of the Mad Professor live show (at Martyrs' in Chicago), as recorded by the TurnTableTerrorist of Echo Beach (WLUW-FM). Dread....beat...and Dub!
