Tonights music from a good Swedish friend….Mats Eden. Beginning with Groupa in the late 70’s-early 80’s up to the present, Mats musical career has expanded to include teaching, composing (both folk-based world music and classical), touring and recording. He has spent much time at the feet of older Swedish master musicians learning their craft in the time-honored way. Among others he has learned from Oscar Andersson, Mångskog, Värmalnd, and Pekkos-Gustav, Binsjö, Dalarna. Mats has also studied much in Norway. He has appeared in the Twin Cities at Nordic Fest and should be coming again this year.
Tonight the doctors of dub returned to the twangy, camp sounds of the Dub Club Tiki Bar…as we pulled out all the fresh leftovers for part 2 of our Echo Beach end-of-summer special. More surf guitar, funky organs, James Bond, Ken Nordine, and Brazilian beats too. Ahh…but this week we mashed in a lot more dub as well…including part 1 of a fantastic mix from Tokyo Tower (put together specifically for our pal Terry C. at Echo Beach on WLUW).
Bigbody Applehead is a group of six relatively young musicians who stopped by to talk about their music and play some examples. I also played music by Gil Scott-Heron, Johnny Mercer, Sahib Shihab, and new musci from Bill Cantrell and more….
With Hurricane Gustav bringing rain to Louisiana, and a political convention bringing violence to Minnesota, it was a day dedicated to remembering we are one as a people. And we all get by with a little help from our friends.
