The distinct and fabulous halves of BeatrixJAR:http://www.beatrixjar.com were my guests this morning to talk about the Spark Festival:http://www.spark.cla.umn.edu, a 6-day multi-venue display of local, national, and even international (Amsterdam!) talents in electronic music and art. How do you define electronic music and art? We got a little talky in the first half of the 8:00 hour as we went through some of its incarnations: sound appropriation, audio collage, sound art, circuit-bending, looping…it goes on, but we wrapped it up and got back to the music. Eventually.
Caryl interviews Laurent Cantet, director of the highly-acclaimed film, THECLASS. The film, which opened February 13 at the Uptown, is set in a Parisian junior high. Cantet sees the film as a microcosm of French society with problems of multi national integration.
During the first hour we went back to the opening of the Nordic Roots Festival 2008. The open group was Waltz with me led Annbjork Lien, with Bruce Molsky, Matts Eden and Tristan Clarridge. Recording engineer for the concert was Chris Dronen, and edit by Dan Rein.
During the second hour we had an interview with local group, Dreamland Faces. We heard live tunes plus a song from their 7 recording Chompin’. We also heard a track from Thomas Mapfumo, and Beausoleil.
