Seriously—a new B-52s record. Thr first in 16 years. Along with the 25th Anniversary Boiled in Lead release, and Gary Louris playing that night, it felt like high school this morning. We also heard new local music from El Guante with an incredible spoken-word piece, and the new Southside Soul Volume One. Congratulations to South Minneapolis for the 20-track representation on that.
Tonight we celebrated the life of, and mourned the passing of, Mikey Dread. All reggae/dub DJs are forever in debt to the Dread at the Controls, Michael Campbell…who went on to Zion March 15, 2008 at the young age of 54.
Happy St. Pat’s! We squeezed in a couple appropriate tunes, as well as some Brazilian music I picked up at the Jazz Records store in Chicago over the weekend. New music highlights this week were The Black Hollies, Patty Larkin, shredding blues guitar from Eddie The Chief Clearwater, and guest David Levin came in for some pop-rocking in the 8:00 hour with his new album, Criminal.
