Yes, the rumors are true. The FCC has approved all the appropriate paperwork for KFAI to convert its two frequencies (90.3/106.7FM) to digital and increase power at 90.3FM. This project is scheduled to be completed by September 21, 2008.
What This Means for Listeners
Once the project is completed, KFAI will have a 900 watt directional antenna on top of the IDS Tower for its 90.3FM signal. This is a significant improvement over the 30 watt transmitter currently in use. This new directional antenna will significantly increase coverage at 90.3 FM to the east and southeast of Minneapolis. Theoretically, listeners should be able to pick up 90.3FM as far as Hastings. Signal coverage should also increase somewhat to the west, northwest, north and northeast of Minneapolis, though not as significantly as to the east and southeast. Take a look at the attached map. If you live in the bright red areas, you can expect to receive KFAI in the expanded coverage area here
The digital conversion project will also affect KFAI’s translator at 106.7FM. Due to old and failing equipment, the 106.7FM translator is currently sending out a signal at 70% power. The conversion project will have a new digital translator installed in St. Paul that will return it to 100% of its regulated power. So if you are having trouble hearing us in St. Paul, you will soon be able to hear us clearly on both frequencies!
The Latest...
As of June 2008, the KFAI engineering team has selected a directional antenna design and ordered the digital transmitter. A few minor adjustments still need to be made and additional equipment needs to be ordered. KFAI is currently planning to complete the installation of the new directional antenna and the digital transmitter and translator by September 21, 2008.
