University of Minnesota School of Music Presents Colloquium Series: “No Success Like Failure: On Bob Dylan’s Vocal Schemata"

Date:
Friday, January 29, 2016 - 4:00pm

This talk investigates Bob Dylan’s mercurial vocal practice through the lens of schema theory. The presentation surveys three of Dylan’s most common vocal schemata and explores their deployment in his early and late styles. Among other things, such a study reveals a vivid contrast between a “composerly” deployment of vocal schemata in the early studio recordings and a more loosely improvisational—even anarchic—process of schematic invention in Dylan’s recent live singing. Though the disparity between these early and late styles is often dramatic, I will suggest that the concept of schema—suitably nuanced—provides a useful heuristic for understanding Dylan’s vocal practice across his career.
