The Funny

Date:
Thursday, June 4, 2015 - 7:30pm to Thursday, June 11, 2015 - 10:30pm

The Funny is a silly, subversive night of radical feminist theater. With a witty, raunchy sensibility, comedic duo Raw Sugar curates a night of fresh artists showcasing new stand up, burlesque, music and more! ‘Cause grrrls just wanna have fun.

Raw Sugar is a group on a mission to produce imaginative works of theatre driven by women. Co-helmed by Jenny Moeller and Rebekah Rentzel, the pair explains, “We created The Funny! to provide a space for female/feminist artists to take risks and make their own work. And to provide a spot for feminists audiences to connect through comedy. We are here to combat dumb sexism with silly feminism.”

The first iteration of The Funny! premiered at Bedlam Lowertown in September 2014, and featured a line of smart standups, as well as Raw Sugar’s campy, cardboard-infused saga to defeat The Pastryarchy (read man in cupcake costume hellbent on Men’s Rights Now!). After a successful run last fall, The Funny! returns to Lowertown this June with a variety of artists performing sketch comedy, burlesque, stand up, dance, music, and more! Combining the irreverent energy of Broad City and the sharp humor of Amy Schumer, The Funny! brings you a hot lineup of local funnies and fun for all. Collaborating artists include Rachel Petrie, Andi Cheney, Molly Budke, Paige Collette, Nickey Robare, Akiko Ostlund, Sarah Parker, Anna Sutheim, Shannon Mae Leach, Hattie Hsu, Madelyne Riley, and Chase Burns and Jared Zeigler of Homo Hotdish! With nightly guest appearances!!
Raw Sugar has also declared it is Feminist Fun Times at Bedlam Lowertown for the first two weeks of June! Happy hour events to get you in the mood, including Sex Ed Trivia with Planned Parenthood, and Comedy in Verse with local lady poets! Stay late for female-driven bands and DJ’s to get your groove on.
