Celebration of Beautiful Zero

Thursday, December 10, 2015 - 7:00pm

Celebrate Jennifer Willoughby’s debut collection, Beautiful Zero, winner of the 2015 Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry and published by Milkweed Editions. Join us at the Minneapolis Institute of Art for a brief reading from the book, a conversation between Jennifer and the 2015 judge, Dana Levin, and a celebratory reception.

Like the Minneapolis Institute of Art, itself a diverse representation of wonder and the power of art, a kaleidoscopic intelligence flows through the poems of Beautiful Zero, embracing forms of culture high and low in effort to find meaning—both personal and universal—in the chaos. Poems about Shark Week and college football sit beside Roman Polanski, and biting critiques of modern war. Even at her most surreal, Willoughby always finds the pulsing heart at the core of the poem, and readers are sure to do the same.

The Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry is the largest annual regional poetry prize, presented in partnership by Milkweed Editions and the Lindquist & Vennum Foundation. Established in 2011 with the aim of supporting outstanding poets and bringing their work to a national stage, the prize awards $10,000 as well as a contract for publication to the author of the winning manuscript.

Jennifer Willoughby was born in Milwaukee and currently lives in Minneapolis, where she has been an advertising copywriter for over fifteen years. Her poems have appeared in The Believer, Boston Review, and the Indiana Review, among others.
